Writing for Animation: EURO guests Brothers McLeod July 11, 2010

#Scriptchat TOPIC: Writing for animation.  EURO guest: the Brothers McLeod, @brothersmcleod.  Deets about the bros HERE

EURO was graced with the amazing Brothers McLeod to discuss all that is animation.  The USA chat was a free-for-all discussing everything we could think of on the subject.  To our joy, @covermyscript, @sdarancette and @AudryT attended and added their expert opinions.  We are so blessed with a talented group of chatters.  Definitely read the transcript for EURO if you missed it… and even if you didn’t.  The Bros were amazing at navigating the craziness that is scriptchat.  We can’t thank them enough for their time and knowledge!  @jeannevb

EURO moderator: Mina Zaher, @DreamsGrafter

7:04 pm             brothersmcleod:             But I was always more interested in writing stories and fiction. #scriptchat
7:04 pm             brothersmcleod:             Greg got himself an animation gig with a company and needed some help writing the story behind it. #scriptchat
7:05 pm             brothersmcleod:             Greg's my brother - the other half of The Brothers McLeod btw #scriptchat
7:05 pm             brothersmcleod:             That was the beginning (although we had worked on story books together before that). #scriptchat
7:05 pm             Jonathan_Peace:             Hi all. I am here but lurking while listening to world cup on radio Hi to @brothersmcleod #scriptchat
7:05 pm             brothersmcleod:             I moved up to work in the family company and we started making short animations in between the proper work. #scriptchat
7:06 pm             brothersmcleod:             After about six years of making short films and gradually making a name for ourselves ... #scriptchat
7:06 pm             brothersmcleod:             ... I decided to approach a children's TV production company #scriptchat
7:06 pm             filmutopia:             #scriptchat Er, World Cup! So, semi lurking - good luck
7:07 pm             brothersmcleod:             ?about working on a series they'd had commissionned - Frankenstein's Cat. #scriptchat
7:07 pm             DreamsGrafter:             @Jonathan_Peace Hi Jonathan ... :) #scriptchat
7:07 pm             brothersmcleod:             I didn't realise that the head writer was someone I'd met before - #scriptchat
7:07 pm             brothersmcleod:             - he had run a course on writing for animation that I'd been on three years earlier. #scriptchat
7:07 pm             brothersmcleod:             Alan Gilbey #scriptchat
7:07 pm             DreamsGrafter:             @filmutopia Hi Clive, thanks. :) ... #scriptchat
7:08 pm             kingisafink:             Hard work... RT @brothersmcleod After about six years of making short films and gradually making a name for ourselves ... #scriptchat
7:08 pm             brothersmcleod:             I was lucky enough that he and the producer decided to give me a go at writing and I wrote three episodes, #scriptchat
7:08 pm             brothersmcleod:             ?plus fifteen one minute funny stings for them. #scriptchat
7:08 pm             keerdo:             Hello! Long time lurker, first time participant :) #scriptchat
7:09 pm             brothersmcleod:             @kingisafink #scriptchat Yes - but fun work - making cartoons - being silly - doing silly voices etc.
7:09 pm             Sofluid:             Goes to show how important networking is! RT @brothersmcleod: The head writer was someone I'd met before - #scriptchat
7:09 pm             brothersmcleod:             That was the start of my TV writing career. Within a year I had also written dialogue for a computer game too. #scriptchat
7:10 pm             DreamsGrafter:             @keerdo Hi Margit, great to see you on here! :) #scriptchat
7:10 pm             brothersmcleod:             @Sofluid #scriptchat Yes networking crucial - more on that in a bit
7:10 pm             DreamsGrafter:             @Sofluid Hi Michelle, thanks for popping in! :) #scriptchat
7:10 pm             brothersmcleod:             @HayleyMckenzie1 #scriptchat Hi Hayley master script editor extraordinaire! Yes always watched and loved animations...
7:10 pm             kingisafink:             @brothersmcleod I love that you're open to working on so many different platforms. Games? Never would have thought of that! #scriptchat
7:11 pm             DreamsGrafter:             So true RT @Sofluid Goes to show how important networking is! RT @brothersmcleod: The head writer was someone I'd met before #scriptchat
7:11 pm             DreamsGrafter:             RT @KageyNYC How do u get work writing for an animated show? Can u break in w/spec samples or do u need a backgrnd in animation? #scriptchat
7:11 pm             Sofluid:             @DreamsGrafter Lovely to be here! #scriptchat
7:11 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat Greg and I watched the same ones growing up and they've become a kind of common language between us
7:12 pm             kingisafink:             @kageynyc Great question, lady! #scriptchat
7:12 pm             HayleyMckenzie1:             @brothersmcleod hi! would you recommend to new writers that they write the kind of things they enjoy watching? #scriptchat
7:12 pm             brothersmcleod:             A spec sample is really useful. #scriptchat
7:12 pm             brothersmcleod:             I still get asked for scripts from other shows I've written for when I meet new producers. #scriptchat
7:13 pm             brothersmcleod:             You could write a sample episode of an existing show or even better write something original. #scriptchat
7:13 pm             brothersmcleod:             If you writer a sample of an existing show, then don't send it to that show. They won't like that I'm always told. #scriptchat
7:13 pm             brothersmcleod:             You can send to everyone else though! I think they want to look at how you handle story and dialogue, #scriptchat
7:13 pm             brothersmcleod:             but also how good you are at thinking in an animated way. #scriptchat
7:14 pm             KageyNYC:             ;) RT @kingisafink: @kageynyc Great question, lady! #scriptchat
7:14 pm             brothersmcleod:             How aware are you of how you can use animation as opposed to live action? #scriptchat
7:14 pm             brothersmcleod:             For my first animated show I scoured the industry press for a while and took note of who had new commissions. #scriptchat
7:15 pm             brothersmcleod:             Then I contacted them and sent them scripts and links to animations that I'd been involved in. #scriptchat
7:15 pm             brothersmcleod:             In terms of having a background in animation that's certainly an advantage I've had.... #scriptchat
7:15 pm             HayleyMckenzie1:             True -we read enough of those all day long! RT @brothersmcleod: If u write a sample of existing show, don't send it to that show.#scriptchat
7:15 pm             brothersmcleod:             my brother is an animator and I've even helped out on lip synch in the early days! #scriptchat
7:15 pm             thewritertype:             #scriptchat Do you dream in live action or animation?
7:15 pm             brothersmcleod:             But I don't think a background is animation is essential to a animation writer. #scriptchat
7:16 pm             brothersmcleod:             I think what's important is being able to understand... why is this an animated idea? #scriptchat
7:16 pm             brothersmcleod:             What can we do that would not be possible or cost effective in live action that will make this more special? #scriptchat
7:16 pm             kingisafink:             RT @brothersmcleod But I don't think a background is animation is essential to a animation writer. #scriptchat
7:16 pm             brothersmcleod:             @thewritertype #scriptchat I wish it was animation. But it's always live action for me.
7:16 pm             brothersmcleod:             Other ways to getting to write for a show... #scriptchat
7:16 pm             DreamsGrafter:             Great tip! RT @brothersmcleod: I scoured the industry press for a while and took note of who had new commissions. #scriptchat
7:16 pm             HayleyMckenzie1:             Brill advice -do your homework! RT @brothersmcleod For 1st animated show I scoured press, took note of who had new commissions. #scriptchat
7:17 pm             brothersmcleod:             good old fashioned meeting people and networking. #scriptchat
7:17 pm             DreamsGrafter:             @thewritertype Hey Paul! :) x #scriptchat
7:17 pm             brothersmcleod:             I go to two or three conferences every year and arrange meetings to go and meet people too. #scriptchat
7:17 pm             KageyNYC:             @brothersmcleod Thanks for reply to my question. :) #scriptchat
7:17 pm             brothersmcleod:             ?and they tend to take you more seriously. #scriptchat
7:18 pm             brothersmcleod:             @KageyNYC #scriptchat A pleasure. Great question.
7:18 pm             DreamsGrafter:             RT @DreamsGrafter Are there any format issues that are a big no-no when writing animation - that you have seen in spec scripts? #scriptchat
7:19 pm             brothersmcleod:             RT @HayleyMckenzie1: @brothersmcleod hi! would you recommend to new writers that they write the kind of things they enjoy watching? #scriptchat
7:19 pm             brothersmcleod:             Hi Hayley - will answer your question in a bit! #scriptchat
7:19 pm             brothersmcleod:             Format issues... #scriptchat
7:20 pm             brothersmcleod:             I can't think of any big no nos that are special to animation over live action scripts. #scriptchat
7:21 pm             brothersmcleod:             ?but when I started working professionally I was asked to put in the occasional clarification - #scriptchat
7:21 pm             brothersmcleod:             ? CLOSE, WIDE, WIDER that kind of thing. #scriptchat
7:21 pm             brothersmcleod:             Still? not too much of it, #scriptchat
7:22 pm             brothersmcleod:             but enough to give a storyboard artist an idea of how close we are to our characters. #scriptchat
7:22 pm             brothersmcleod:             I have seen some scripts for animation with hardly any action in between the dialogue. #scriptchat
7:22 pm             HayleyMckenzie1:             animation script written in same way, just that what's described (character, story, action) is unique to animation #scriptchat
7:22 pm             brothersmcleod:             That's never a good sign I think because with animation you have to bear in mind that... #scriptchat
7:22 pm             brothersmcleod:             ?everything that happens on screen visually is determined by you and the storyboard artist that comes after. #scriptchat
7:22 pm             kingisafink:             RT @brothersmcleod I can't think of any big no-nos that are special to animation over live action scripts. #scriptchat
7:22 pm             brothersmcleod:             Why not just go for a live action shoot! #scriptchat
7:23 pm             kingisafink:             A problem indeed. RT @brothersmcleod I have seen some scripts for animation w/ hardly any action in between the dialogue. #scriptchat
7:24 pm             brothersmcleod:             before the tweet that says ...but when I... it should say... #scriptchat
7:24 pm             DreamsGrafter:             @chained Then come join in on #scriptchat! We're discussing writing for animation with @brothersmcleod. ;)
7:24 pm             DreamsGrafter:             RT @DreamsGrafter What is the most frequently asked question from aspring animation screenwriters? #scriptchat
7:24 pm             DreamsGrafter:             RT @DreamsGrafter What is your answer? #scriptchat
7:24 pm             Sofluid:             When I wrote an animated short film script for a competition I loved being able to be so descriptive and really paint the story #scriptchat
7:25 pm             brothersmcleod:             I remember from my Masters that we were always told not to put in any kind of camera moves into our scripts? #scriptchat
7:25 pm             sdarancette:             I am missing Eurodisney #scriptchat. But will try to catch the end of it.
7:26 pm             brothersmcleod:             I think the most asked question from aspiring writers is how do I break into the industry. #scriptchat
7:26 pm             brothersmcleod:             I can relate to that - it took a long time to break in and even now? #scriptchat
7:27 pm             brothersmcleod:             when I've written some other spec scripts for adult (i.e. not children's) TV? #scriptchat
7:27 pm             DreamsGrafter:             Japanese animation competition for stories in English: http://bit.ly/9FxNAI #scriptchat Deadline end of July. Good luck!
7:27 pm             brothersmcleod:             ? or for live action and not animation it's very difficult to break in because each sector seems to be... #scriptchat
7:27 pm             HayleyMckenzie1:             not sure u need more description in animation script- not a novel! RT @Sofluid doing animation script loved being so descriptive #scriptchat
7:28 pm             DreamsGrafter:             You're doing brilliantly Myles. Lovin' your answers! RT @brothersmcleod: Wow this is intense! #scriptchat
7:28 pm             brothersmcleod:             But I think tenacity and spec scripts are always going to be the way in. #scriptchat. Another frequently asked question...
7:28 pm             Pale_Jewel:             @Dreamsgrafter #scriptchat this is so interesting talking about animation. I've written a script that some think is animated when it wasn't.
7:28 pm             brothersmcleod:             ?that Greg and I get is where do you get your ideas from? #scriptchat
7:29 pm             kingisafink:             Already halfway through. You're doing great! RT @brothersmcleod Wow this is intense! #scriptchat
7:29 pm             brothersmcleod:             I like Douglas Adams' answer that he got his from a mail order company in Indianapolis. #scriptchat
7:29 pm             brothersmcleod:             But mostly it's from just going on walks, a funny word or phrase might start something, #scriptchat
7:29 pm             DreamsGrafter:             #scriptchat @brothersmcleod's website: http://www.brothersmcleod.co.uk/
7:29 pm             LisaFromNYC:             RT @DreamsGrafter Japanese animation competition for stories in English: http://bit.ly/9FxNAI Deadline end of July. Good luck! #scriptchat
7:29 pm             brothersmcleod:             or a sketch or a scribble, or an inspiring film or a book. #scriptchat
7:29 pm             MetaPhoenix:             @Sofluid If you can paint an animated film inside your head while writing (with superb level of detail), it's a big advantage. #scriptchat
7:30 pm             brothersmcleod:             They usually develop through discussion between us - finding things we both respond to. #scriptchat
7:30 pm             kingisafink:             Fun! RT @DreamsGrafter Japanese animation competition for stories in English: http://bit.ly/9FxNAI Deadline end of July. #scriptchat
7:31 pm             DreamsGrafter:             @Pale_Jewel Do you know why they thought it was animation? #scriptchat ... Would you consider selling it as animation?
7:32 pm             DreamsGrafter:             Haha! RT @brothersmcleod I like Douglas Adams' answer that he got his [ideas] from a mail order company in Indianapolis. #scriptchat
7:32 pm             HayleyMckenzie1:             RT @DreamsGrafter: Japanese animation competition for stories in English: http://bit.ly/9FxNAI #scriptchat Deadline end of July. Good luck!
7:32 pm             brothersmcleod:             @HayleyMckenzie1 would you recommend to new writers that they write the kind of things they enjoy watching? #scriptchat
7:32 pm             thewritertype:             #scriptchat I write animation characters exactly like live action people but bend and play with reality for the action itself.
7:32 pm             brothersmcleod:             That's an interesting question Hayley... do I write the things I watch? #scriptchat
7:33 pm             DreamsGrafter:             Hey guys, that was the last of the prepared questions ... #scriptchat
7:33 pm             brothersmcleod:             Hmm! Thinks! #scriptchat
7:33 pm             Sofluid:             Not necessarily more, but you can "paint" the scenes RT @HayleyMckenzie1: not sure u need more description in animation script #scriptchat
7:33 pm             HayleyMckenzie1:             good advice! RT @thewritertype: #scriptchat I write animation characters exactly like live action but bend reality for the action itself.
7:34 pm             DreamsGrafter:             So let's chat with @brothersmcleod and between ourselves ... writing for animation. Would you? #scriptchat
7:34 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat I think it makes total sense to see what other people do with the ideas you enjoy - i think that's when you work out how you...
7:34 pm             brothersmcleod:             ... would do it differently. How you would make it your own. #scriptchat
7:34 pm             jdfunari:             RT @eledrew: Btw watched TALES FROM THE SCRIPT & have to ask, is there a smarter & more articulate writer working today than @FrankDarabont ? #scriptchat
7:35 pm             DreamsGrafter:             By the way, @thewritertype was the screenwriter for Magic Roundabout's feature film: http://imdb.to/9scOam #scriptchat
7:35 pm             kingisafink:             Yes! RT @DreamsGrafter writing for animation. Would you? #scriptchat
7:36 pm             brothersmcleod:             RT @thewritertype: #scriptchat I write animation characters exactly like live action people but bend and play with reality for the action itself.
7:36 pm             brothersmcleod:             @thewritertype #scriptchat yes! characters in animation must be characters that the audience can identify with and love and hate!
7:36 pm             momentsoffilm:             Hello #scriptchat folks. I'm late... are we talking animation?
7:36 pm             kingisafink:             Wrote a short for a timed contest. Ended up w/ fun animated script by accident. Delightful surprise. Hope to hook up w/ animator #scriptchat
7:37 pm             brothersmcleod:             I think there was a question about writing for US shows on the blog #scriptchat
7:37 pm             chained:             #scriptchat if any of you need a really funny voice for animation #film contact me by directmessage I can do a brilliant voice
7:37 pm             thewritertype:             #scriptchat But my script was improved in the same way a heretic is improved by being burned at the stake
7:38 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat I'm not sure how much toing and froing there is across the big pond but...
7:38 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat I've certainly worked on kids TV shows that have UK and US writers... I think because the companies that run the shows...
7:39 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat are multinationals often and so look far afield!
7:39 pm             DreamsGrafter:             @momentsoffilm Hi Leilana ... we are ... (talking animation) ... :) #scriptchat
7:39 pm             LisaFromNYC:             Q: how closely do u work w/an animator or do they go mostly by ur written description? #scriptchat
7:39 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat Greg and I have also been approached by US companies to work on development although that's not actually come to fruition yet!
7:39 pm             keerdo:             Have you got the look/design of the animation in mind when writing the script?Or look comes later? Or is it differnt every time? #scriptchat
7:40 pm             brothersmcleod:             @thewritertype #scriptchat feeling your emotion!
7:41 pm             brothersmcleod:             @LisaFromNYC #scriptchat I've had varied experiences of working with animators... on our own shows...
7:41 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat ...we work very closely. And that's why I think of myself as a director on our own stuff as well as a writer... but...
7:41 pm             DreamsGrafter:             Good luck! RT @brothersmcleod #scriptchat Greg and I have also been approached by US companies to work on development ... !
7:42 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat ...on scripts for other prod cos... once I've written the script it's out of my hands and the end product can be quite different
7:42 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat ...to what you had in mind.
7:42 pm             MetaPhoenix:             Maybe too much "sacred feminine." RT @thewritertype #scriptchat But my script was improved in the same way a heretic is improved...burned...
7:42 pm             DreamsGrafter:             Omg, I have to say @brothersmcleod is handling #scriptchat like a pro! :)
7:42 pm             Pale_Jewel:             @DreamsGrafter @brothersmcleod #scriptchat I kind of do and in fact I now want the landscape as animation but the character live...
7:43 pm             brothersmcleod:             @keerdo look and design of an animation in mind when writing... #scriptchat
7:43 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat Wow I'm glad I learned to touch type btw...
7:43 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat sometimes it can hamper the creative process to think too much about what is and isn't possible...
7:43 pm             HayleyMckenzie1:             essential for scriptchat! RT @brothersmcleod: #scriptchat Wow I'm glad I learned to touch type btw...
7:43 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat ...or within budget!
7:44 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat ...and you just have to let the creative ideas flow. Eventually you have to do a redraft with budget, etc, in mind...
7:44 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat ...and that's when a chat with the animator (or brother!) can be really useful. Some of our animations like Sticks...
7:45 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat .... that's just come out on BBC Comedy online... required very particular thought processes to think...
7:45 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat How can I write for animated lolly pop (popsicle) sticks?!
7:46 pm             kingisafink:             Think big! RT @brothersmcleod let the creative ideas flow. Eventually do a redraft w/ budget, etc, in mind... #scriptchat
7:47 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat we call that first creative process The Ideas Room - which I think we stole off Disney
7:47 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat Ours isn't actually a room... but a state of mind. Wow that sounds pretentious when written down!

7:51 pm             keerdo:             One Estonian animr Pärn -uses people as characters but action is surreal. I'll prbably watch his films with new eyes after this #scriptchat
7:51 pm             HayleyMckenzie1:             @brothersmcleod is there an animation idea you have but don't feel ready to tackle yet? #scriptchat
7:51 pm             sdarancette:             I can't imagine a good animation script with no action description. The ani directors need the direction on the page #scriptchat
7:51 pm             DreamsGrafter:             Just under 10 mins. to go on #scriptchat ... Talking about writing for animation. Most difficult area of filmmaking to get into.
7:52 pm             DreamsGrafter:             RT @brothersmcleod: #scriptchat Anyone else have some animation questions?
7:52 pm             sdarancette:             hey, I just got here. Had to run some errands but will scan and read what's been said. #scriptchat
7:52 pm             chained:             #scriptchat if u adapt a tv show you shouldn't murder it in a film Sorry but to be honest #themagicroundabout sucked
7:52 pm             brothersmcleod:             @MetaPhoenix #scriptchat Shows the importance of re-reading and re-drafting!
7:53 pm             thewritertype:             @chained #scriptchat Very gracious. I wouldn't entirely disagree.
7:53 pm             sdarancette:             I hate when I pitch a project for animation and the exec suggests, maybe that would be better as a live-action project #scriptchat
7:53 pm             brothersmcleod:             RT @DreamsGrafter: @brothersmcleod I have a question! Do you see the UK film industry embracing animation beyond Wallace and Grommit? #scriptchat
7:53 pm             jeannevb:             Lurking fr lake. AGREE! :) RT @DreamsGrafter: Omg, I have to say @brothersmcleod is handling #scriptchat like a pro! :)
7:53 pm             brothersmcleod:             I think there's only limited space in the UK for an animation industry #scriptchat
7:54 pm             brothersmcleod:             Mainly due to the cost of making it... and therefore a limited no. of companies of Aardman's size #scriptchat
7:54 pm             HayleyMckenzie1:             @sdarancette if it could be live action it probably should be. animation script should feel like it can only work in that form #scriptchat
7:54 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat That's why we try to keep things very small... and only expand our team when we get work in... we use freelancers...
7:54 pm             DreamsGrafter:             @chained I haven't seen Magic Roundabout but appreciate that the development process isn't straightforward. #scriptchat
7:55 pm             keerdo:             What about audience?Heard Wall-E and Up were targeted not at kids but at mums of 8yo kids. Any thoughts? Do u think of audience? #scriptchat
7:55 pm             Pale_Jewel:             @brothersmcleod #scriptchat how close to writing for games is animation? Do you think it's the same thinking process?
7:55 pm             sdarancette:             I know a well-established UK animation director who has gotten his biggest gigs in the US. #scriptchat
7:55 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat so I do think there is film industry beyond W&G but it is of course hard for anyone to notice what you're doing!
7:56 pm             filmutopia:             #scriptchat @brothersmcleod Nice scriptchat, you did brilliantly to compete with a fairly lackluster game of football
7:56 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat At the moment Greg and I are focussing much more on TV content, esp comedy, with the occassional short film.
7:56 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat I hate the word occassional ocassional occasional
7:58 pm             sdarancette:             @brothersmcleod I have a hard time spelling misspelled. Most of the time. #scriptchat
7:58 pm             brothersmcleod:             I think trying to think of AN AUDIENCE is befuddling. Trying to think of an individual person that you know... #scriptchat

8:00 pm             sdarancette:             TV animation writing in the USA is mostly determined by marketing depts. to sell toys and cereal. #scriptchat
8:00 pm             brothersmcleod:             So it was a very similar principle, except I wasn't writing action... but responding to the actions of the game #scriptchat
8:01 pm             brothersmcleod:             #scriptchat ...and trying to come up with funny one liners most of the time. It's a great way to improve your comedy...

12:06 am             covermyscript:             writing for animation you have more freedom, but you have artists and budgets constraints. so you have to write to that. #scriptchat

12:08 am             sdarancette:             @beingbrad Not quite. TV animation especially lives and dies by cereal and toy companies. #scriptchat

12:19 am             sdarancette:             sound is a funny thing in animation scripts. You do have to indicate SFX. Even in sluglines sometimes. #scriptchat
12:19 am             covermyscript:             it's counter-intuitive but true. RT @sdarancette: So unlike in your live-action, heavy handed action is almost encouraged. #scriptchat
12:19 am             jeannevb:             @covermyscript i so loved Samurai Jack #scriptchat
12:19 am             covermyscript:             but important thing to note is that you have to keep in same page length. so while verbose action is encourage, brevity is king. #scriptchat

12:24 am             sdarancette:             The feature animated film takes literally, no kidding here, average of 5-6 years to reach the screen for many factors... #scriptchat
12:24 am             covermyscript:             yes. RT @UncompletedWork: Could you explain what the Story Editor on an animation show does? #Scriptchat
12:24 am             zacsanford2:             @Timsn If you want to see examples of comic book/graphic novel scripts, check out Comic Script Archive http://tinyurl.com/6frwns #scriptchat
12:24 am             AudryT:             @Timsn Graphic novels are written differently than animations scripts, but yes, they are scripts rather than being prose. #scriptchat
12:24 am             covermyscript:             an animation story editor oversees the integrity of the overall series, while tending to each episode individually. #scriptchat

12:26 am             jeannevb:             @BobCornero did u check the links on our blog www.scriptchat.com ? #scriptchat
12:26 am             sdarancette:             The story editors, literally edit the story. They tell the writer what works, what doesn't then decides if it ready for script #scriptchat
12:26 am             covermyscript:             or lucky, or both. right time, right place @yeah_write: So you'd have to be outstanding to get looked at in the animation area. #scriptchat
12:26 am             AudryT:             @covermyscript They also sometimes end up rewriting entire scripts, Story Editors do. #scriptchat
12:27 am             yeah_write:             @covermyscript How did you get started in writing animation? #scriptchat
12:27 am             jmiewald:             Just a comment - I'd say independent animated films have a definite advantage over other indie films. Everyone loves a cartoon. #scriptchat
12:27 am             zacsanford2:             @BobCornero Scripts to films yet to be released are harder to find online, but sometimes you may get lucky searching around. #scriptchat

1:12 am             AudryT:             @AllInky *nods* If writing it as live-action changes nothing, there's no point to making it animated. #scriptchat
1:13 am             beingbrad:             i think if ur writing just to sell, ur writing for the wrong reasons. if ur not writing ani b/c it won't sell, well, same/same #scriptchat
